November 15th 2008 - Tearfund Day

Viewing Tearcraft items The piano trio

This year Rachel Retallick and her children held their annual Tearfund coffee morning and evening at Ebenezer. There was a good selection of craft items from Tearcraft, books from Bangor Christian Bookshop, and prints and books by Philip Snow, the wildlife artist. As a bonus, in the evening we were treated to music played by Hannah Retallick on the keyboard, David Retallick on the violin and Steffan Joyner on the cello. £555 worth of Tearcraft and £138 worth of books were sold. The sale of prints and books plus gifts contributed £125 to Tearfund. Altogether a worthwhile venture.

October 2008 - Carys Joyner

Carys with co-workers

Carys Joyner writes: I am volunteering with IFES InterAction for 10 months and based on the south side of Nicosia. We are involved in the running of a Student Cafe called 'The Place'. It is a social evening held every Thursday where students they can meet other students, play board games, hang out and hear the Gospel through a short talk at the end. I am in a team of four, two volunteers including myself and Sebastian and two IFES staff.
There is no official Student movement in Cyprus and there is only one IFES group which meets on campus. This meeting is led by a Ghanaian called Kwame in Americanos College and we will attend this every week and support Kwame in any way possible. Our work is mainly with international students, our ministry is very relational and sharing Christ through love and friendship, evangelising and encouraging. We will also also engage in Bible studies with students who are interested in learning more about this intriguing Jesus figure or what exactly Christianity is.

11th October 2008 - Men's Breakfast

Some of the participants

Once a month, from October to July, some of the men of the church meet on a Saturday morning to enjoy breakfast and fellowship in the church hall. Following a simple breakfast, prepared by our pastor, we discuss a chapter or two from Sinclair Ferguson's book, The Christian Life. Afterwards all join in clearing and washing up.

28th September 2008 - Welcome Lunch for Students

Folk enjoying food and friendship

At the beginning of the new university term we invited students to join us to a meal after the morning service, so that we could get to know each other better. Graham and Pauline Watson organised a magnificent spread; and volunteers quickly disposed of the washing up afterwards. A great occasion.

18th June 2008 - Funeral Service

Mrs Stevenson & Kyung-Ju Finnie

Our oldest member, Mrs Jane Stevenson, died on June 10th, aged 99 years. The funeral service was held in Ebenezer chapel and was led by the Revd. David Finnie. David Finnie afterwards led the graveside committal at Bangor New Cemetry. Later a meal was served in the church hall. Mrs Stevenson had wanted the mourners to meet over a meal after the funeral and had made financial provision for this. The atmosphere of the proceedings was a mixture of sorrow for the loss of a much loved friend, and joy that she had passed into glory.

8th June 2008 - Baptismal Service

Gareth speaking Gareth speaking

Ebenezer, whilst not insisting on it for membership, practises believer's baptism. We have no baptistry, so once in a while we hire the local swimming pool to hold a service of baptism. John Gough led the service and David Finnie preached on 'Security in Christ'. Two members of the congegation, Anastasia Bird and Carys Joyner, gave their testimonies and were baptised. We pray that the pool attendants also benefited from the service.
