40th Anniversary Celebration
(1969 - 2009)
'Samuel took a stone... He named it Ebenezer (= Stone of Help), saying, ‘Thus far has the Lord helped us’ (1 Sam 7:12).
On Saturday and Sunday, September 19th and 20th 2009, Ebenezer celebrated its 40th anniversary. Saturday evening was given over to a celebratory meal and a presentation. On Sunday, Dr. David Norbury, one of the founder members and currently General Secretary of the Evangelical Movement of Wales preached at both services.
The chairs in the main chapel were re-arranged and tables laid. There was an
excellent selection of food available, and the chapel was filled with joyful
conversation as many old friends were re-united and current members met previous
members of the congregation.
Following the meal, the chapel was speedily re-arranged and chairs returned to their normal position.
Then followed a presentation which included the projection of
pictures of past members and of past church events, and part of a filmed interview
with Dr. Dewi Hughes, one of the founder members and elders of the church.
Other, live, interviews included one with Geraint Jones, founder member and elder,
and Mrs Nancy Hayden, the sole remaining original member, and one with the Revd. Ioan
Davies. They remembered the early faltering steps and God's goodness and upholding
during cvhallenging times. The Revd. Martin Lloyd described how he came to faith
and was baptised in the sea at Benllech.
An epilogue was given by our minister, the Revd. David Finnie, on the theme of God's faithfulness and mercies despite our unfaithfulness.
On the Sunday, Dr. David Norbury, founder member and elder, led the worship
and preached at both services. His addresses can be found on the
sermons page of this website.
At the morning service, the Revd. Geraint Morgan, former
minister of Ebenezer gave his perspective on the founding and history of the church.
There was an error in Geraint Morgan's
talk and a correction has been grafted in.
There is an Anniversary Edition of the church's bi-monthly magazine Grapevine available as a PDF download. It includes several articles on the founding and early life of the church.
